Registered Sex Offenders

As many of you may know, some of the apartments and business owners along East Washington Street cater to a cliental that is not typically found in Irvington. In particular, the Indiana Sheriff’s Sex Offender Registry has indicated that several people listed on that registry now reside in buildings along East Washington Street.

Two years ago when the current Board of Directors of the Irvington Community Council was elected to office, they were asked to establish a goal or project that they as a Board wished to focus on for their two-year term. The Council voted to focus on crime in Irvington. This is a mammoth undertaking and one that reaches far beyond Irvington. But none the less, the Council began the task. We began with community meetings to ask what issues or problems would be best to address. The meetings were not well attended, but none the less the Council set out to make a difference focusing first on East Washington Street. As part of that focus, the Council began discussions with the apartment owners along East Washington Street. In particular was an apartment building that housed large number of people who appeared on the Indiana Sheriff’s Sex Offender Registry. That effort continues today to include a variety of issues and most of the larger apartment building owners. In November 2005 the Council voted unanimously to ask the City to review the motel license for the Indy East Motel (5855 East Washington Street) – an effort that also continues today. Over the past several months, more and more people who appear on the Indiana Sheriff’s Sex Offender Registry were claiming residency at the Indy East Motel. Again the number of registered sex offenders seemed unreasonable to have housed in one location, especially in a business that has, according to City officials, had nearly 900 police runs in a recent five year period. When this information came to the attention of the Council, we began contacting the Department of Corrections as well as many, if not all, of our elected officials.

This morning the Council received a telephone call from the Office of the Governor stating that the registered sex offenders placed in Irvington by the Department of Corrections will be relocated outside of Irvington. For security reasons, few details can be released, but we were assured this morning that relocation would begin soon and be completed in a reasonable time and that this effort is not limited to those currently housed at the Indy East Motel.

We would like to thank all those who helped in our effort, including Jeff Bennett the Warren Township Trustee, Sheriff Frank Anderson and his staff that work with registered sex offenders, State Representative Larry Buell, State Senator Pat Miller, the Office of the Governor, the Department of Corrections and those on the Council who gave their time, as well as all of you who contacted your elected representatives and the Department of Corrections.

Wow- and I thought I disliked sex offenders. As "monstrous" as you say they are, they are still people. Some were sexually/mentally/physically abused themselves and, although that's not an excuse, should be kept in mind.

Interesting. Last summer 2006 I wrote to many the governor, mayor, etc. I wish I had kept their replies and none replies!! One actually stated that no one had control over where these people located. We need proof that these people are being moved.

I am afraid they may be at the Skyline. The activity has really increased which was my fear when the Indy East closed.

I have seen prostitutes walking through the area as school children are walking home from the charter school.

This is good news for Irvington and hopefully the relocation starts sooner than later. Nobody wants this element residing in their community under these circumstances. Actually, for the first time this sounds like a proactive approach to solving a problem rather than the typical Indianapolis based reactive approach to a horrendous event such as one of these predators putting their hands on a child, woman or, for that matter, a man in our community.

With that said, I must admit that I have not been made aware of any of these people causing problems in the community and I have not heard of any sex related crimes being committed in the Irvington area. However, I have been made aware of numerous thefts, robberies, burglaries and the like being committed around Irvington. It is not that these sex offenders are incapable of committing robberies, burglaries or thefts, but, it is a different source of blight in Irvington that is probably attributing more to these crimes than the Indy East Motel. A source that has been around for far longer than the Department of Corrections placing sex offenders in Irvington. That source being none other than the PLASMA ALLIANCE. Yes that same so called "good neighbor" in fancy clothes, who practically bribed the so-called decision makers in Irvington a few years back with promises of stewardship and financial support in order to keep their body fluid harvesting business located in Irvington. The residents of Irvington can continue to successfully fight off pedophiles from flocking to their east side neighborhood, but until they focus on closing down the gateway to crime in their community, the dregs of this city will continue to case local homes and businesses 7 days a week as they traverse Irvington, making their way to the 5600 block of East Washington Street to sell their fluids.

Granted, some plasmites' sole interest is to supplement their income by giving a part of themselves toward the production of cosmetics. However, the majority of plasmites have the thinking similar to your common criminal, do little to no work for a return. They sit in a chair, watch television and have their arm drained by a machine. Similar to the plasmite, a criminal does minimal work (the average robbery, burglary or theft probably takes about 10 seconds to 10 minutes) and they get a return. So to say that a plasmite and criminal's thought process is the same, makes complete sense.

It is unlikely that all plasmites are criminals. It is not unlikely, that many criminals are plasmites and therefore, the lure of the quick $25 for plasma is blossoming into the lure of Mr. and Mrs. Jones' new plasma TV in their living room on Ritter Avenue and Dufour's cash register till.

If the residents of Irvington really want to address the crime issue in their community then they must quit looking the other way when it comes to the PLASMA CENTER. Irvington must put forth as much effort in ridding this menace as they did in eradicating the sex offender motel.

Why are these offenders not in Jail, oopps thats right they are full...Happy to hear Indy East is closed, now I'm fearful that they will come in droves to Skyline, there is enough trouble there now. But where ever they go heaven help us all. Irvington is a great community, WE ALL need to stand up and take our community back. How dare these people invade our privacy. They rob us of more than material things.

Before Jockamo's upper crust pizza opened I went to the Legend for lunch and dinner and enjoyed the atmosphere and the food. On my third and final visit, I ordered the shrimp cocktail, I was with a girlfriend. The shrimp were extremely tough and I told the waitress this. She in turn went and got "John" who came out into the restaurant and argued with me until I really just wanted him to leave me alone so I could enjoy the rest of my meal with my friend. He argued with me that the shrimp was not tough! We finished our meal, except for the shrimp cocktail in which I was not reimbursed or credited with its uneaten price. My Husband and I went to Jockamo's the other night for dinner, not only is the atmosphere great but so is the service and food and what a variety. They have it all over the Legend and I know I wont be back to the Legend now that this cool restaurant is opened. Here is a tip...Maybe someone should knock that chip off of John's shoulder to let him know he isnt better than others! Thanks! Have a great day, John.
