May Flowers

Sorry we haven't posted, we will try to do better in May and start with a list of some of the issues we will see in the coming month. We will keep you posted as each item progresses.

  • The new owners of Irvington Plaza have begun work to clean up the plaza and we hope to begin discussions about its redevelopment.
  • Even though it is outside of Irvington, we should soon hear about plans for the redevelopment of Eastgate.
  • The developer of the Washington and Audubon property appears to be prepared to present revised designs. We anticipate getting our first look in May.
  • Work should begin soon on as many as two condo conversion projects bringing Irvington up to 40 new homeowners.
  • We should see at least one new business along East Washington Street.
  • Work will continue on the Irving Theater in anticipation of it's first event in June.
  • And work is continuing to finalize the Irvington Historic Preservation Plan.

Okay, this is a bad trend. I've been the first to post on each of the first two posts. Somebody better beat me to the next one.

Here's a discussion topic for everyone to talk about:

What's the best part about living in Irvington? What sets us apart from other neighborhoods in the city? Why did you move to Irvington?

I moved here because I found a house I loved. I knew nothing about the neighborhood, nothing about the people, nothing about the history. I just decided that this is where I was going to live.

I lucked out.

I soon found out that the neighborhood, the people, the culture, and the incredible history, were built-in amenities that were already included in the purchase price.

What is the latest word on the Starbucks at Audobon and Washington? I noticed that the new Napa building is just about done and I hope plans are moving along to get rid of the old building.

Earlier this month the developer submitted drawings to the Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission so the case could be heard at the June 7th Commission meeting. A committee of the Council will see drawings this week and the developer is scheduled to make a formal presentation at the May 16th Council meeting.

Why are there no building permits on file for the work being done at the Irving Theater? And why are they booking musical acts that regularly appear at The Emerson? What happened to that group that wanted to make it a family friendly venue?

In response to the comments about the Irving. My name is Joe, I'm one of the owners.

In regards to the permit issue, we've spent a tremendous amount of time cleaning the building and having the existing systems checked out. We're bringing the building back to the 1987 renovation for the time being but our plans do call for a major renovation (hopefully) in five years which include larger restrooms among other things.

So far, we've booked exactly one show which is a small sample set to try and draw a trend for booking Emerson bands. Some of the acts we have booked for the Celebrate Irvington event have played at the Emerson, mostly due to a lack of other suitable all-ages venues in the city.

Finally, we do want a family friendly venue. We have no intention of competing with the Emerson or taking their bread and butter as far as genre or crowds go. Please email us if you have any other concerns, info@theirving.com

Thanks,
Joe

I would like to hear more about Irvington Plaza progress. I know a new owner is working to fix it up a bit, but what about the drawings on one of the websites to totally change the plaza? It had buildings changes, a park, and the trail in it. How close, or far away, is Irvington from making one of the drawings a reality?

The bar near the DAV really needs to go away. It is a prostitute haven (as is the Skyline Hotel).

Irvington Plaza was purchased last November by a group of investors who also purchased with the Plaza about a dozen other troubled centers. They have cleaned up the Plaza and plan other improvements. We have not discussed with the new owner any changes beyond the clean up, but hope those discussions will happen soon.

The drawing you have seen were prepared several years ago by Ball State University architecture students to show the variety of possiblities for the Plaza.

How far or how close we are to seeing significate redevelopment is hard to say. At least with this owner it appears we have someone taking action to clean up the Plaza and open to discussions about future redevelopment.
