Indy East Motel License Renewal Denied

Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson will announce today at a 10:00am press conferenceto in Irvington that the City of Indianapolis will not be renewing the license of the Indy East Motel located at 5855 East Washington Street.

The City’s action is a result of Council’s efforts late last year to request a hearing for the Indy East Motel licensing renewal. Council Board Member, Brian Mack made an excellent presentation to the license review board, presenting crime statistics, adjacent neighbor’s testimony, and the community’s concerns.

Few details are available at this time. Katie Lineweaver, the Warren Township Neighborhood Liaison, will be at the Council’s Tuesday, May 16th meeting to provide the community with an update and additional details.

Way to go Irvington Community Council!

I was warned about the Indy East Motel just before I moved to Irvington. It made me seriously reconsider the neighborhood. I'm glad I did move here and I'm glad they're out the door!

After ten years in the neighborhood and hearing many, many, complaints about the motel and seeing what an eye sore it is, I'm glad to see it going. With our new designation as a historic neighborhood, I'm sure the land will be sought after and we can find a good neighbor to replace this terrible one

I agree...long overdue. Now we need to worry about what is moving in there next. Hopefully Michael's optimism is well placed. Now what about those check cashing places....

The problem will still exist and just move into the rental units along Washington. The building doesn't fit the area but it will be another vacant building and may become an eyesore. We are being short sighted if we think this will fix the problems along Washington. Now we will have two major vacant buildings with chainlink fences.

No one on the council is under the impression that closing the Indy East will solve Irvington's crime and prostitution problem. But we all do agree that it is a step in the right direction. Are all of our problems solved? Absolutely not.

The easy part was getting the city to take notice and shut it down. The difficult part will be finding an adaptive re-use for the building in the future....or tearing it down, whatever the case may be.

It's a big step, it sends a strong message, and it shows that we are serious about doing more to protect the quality of life of our residents.

And while the Audubon Court Apartments has a chain link fence around it, we're optimistic because it has a new owner who is preparing to turn the units into condos. I don't like the fence either, but it keeps the location from becoming a haven for criminal activity.

Last post was a bit defensive in regard to the Council. I did not
read in the comments of anonymous
anything about the Council. While not being a proponent of much of
the vision of the Council this was a positive. I believe anonymous
was just stating a fact! Some of
the feedback I got in the neighborhood was a little cynicism directed at the "hoopla" surrounding the announcement.

I apologize if I sounded defensive. What I meant to imply was that while some of comments that were said in the media seemed to indicate that this was going to solve all of our crime problems, the council understands that there is still much more to do.

I think it is an outrage to pass blame on a business that works in conjunction with police department to help the area. It would be a different story if the owners of the Indy East were turning a blind eye towards the crime.

It is also a crime to use politics in such a manner to close down a local business. I believe it was a pathetic attempt by the mayor to get affluent voters on his side...especially for a cause that has no merrit.

The Council should also try to work with the businesses in the area rather than trying to shut them down. There is a reason there is crime in the area, and it is not because of a motel. The community should help the people who choose to live a life like this...rather than having the problem move down the street.
